Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting your feet wet, Captain Asa Martin knows these waters like the back of his hand and is all about putting you on the fish. Let's dive into what makes this trip a must-do for anyone looking to experience the best of Florida's inshore fishing scene.
Picture this: You're cruising through the marshes around St. Marks in a top-notch, custom-rigged skiff at the crack of dawn. The air's crisp, the water's calm, and you're armed with the latest gear to take on whatever the coastal waters throw your way. Captain Asa's got his eyes peeled for those tell-tale signs of feeding reds and trout. You'll be sight-fishing in skinny water one minute, then working deeper holes the next. This isn't your average cast-and-wait game – it's an active, engaging day on the water where you'll learn the ins and outs of inshore fishing from a pro who lives and breathes it.
On this trip, you'll get hands-on with some killer inshore techniques. We're talking about finessing soft plastics along grass lines for trout, or maybe sight-casting to tailing reds in the shallows. Captain Asa's all about matching the hatch and reading the water, so you might find yourself flipping jigs under docks for sheepshead or working a topwater for explosive strikes. He'll show you how to work the tides, spot the bait, and present your lure just right. And trust me, when that rod doubles over with a big red on the other end, you'll be grateful for every tip he's shared.
"Great day on the water! Asa is extremely experienced and willing to share his knowledge. He created a nice low key vibe, showed us some cool spots, and helped us catch a bunch of trout and some slot redfish." - George
"Do you want your shoulders to burn from wrestling with redfish and trout? Do you want to be so tired you can't even turn the handle on your reel? If so, book your trip with Captain Asa Martin. You won't regret it!" - Timothy
"Absolutely the most incredible trip I've ever had on the water. As an ex tournament bass angler, that speaks volumes. I've never even thought about a guide, but I really wanted my son and I to have a memorable experience. Asa Martin's service and company was 5 star, from start-to-finish, my son boated over 20 fish and I caught my "personal best" Trout. I've never seen such local knowledge on "any" body of water! A trip my son and I will never forget. Thanks again Asa!" - Jeff
Redfish: These copper-colored bruisers are the stars of the show in St. Marks. Known for their powerful runs and distinctive spot near the tail, redfish in these waters can range from scrappy "rat reds" to trophy-sized bull reds over 40 inches. They love to hang around oyster bars and grass flats, often revealing their location with their tails sticking out of the water as they root for crabs. Fall is prime time for reds, but you can catch them year-round here.
Sea Trout: Speckled trout are the bread and butter of inshore fishing in Florida. These spotted predators are known for their soft mouths and tendency to shake hooks, making them a fun challenge for anglers of all levels. In St. Marks, you'll find them lurking in deeper holes and along grass edges, especially during the cooler months. They're suckers for a well-presented soft plastic or a slow-twitched topwater lure at dawn.
Sheepshead: Don't let their goofy teeth fool you – sheepshead are crafty adversaries that'll test your finesse fishing skills. These striped convicts are structure-loving fish that you'll find around docks, pilings, and oyster bars. They're notorious bait stealers, so when you feel that light tap, it's time to set the hook. Winter and early spring are prime times to target sheepshead in St. Marks, and they make for some fantastic table fare.
Southern Flounder: These flatfish are masters of camouflage, blending in perfectly with the sandy and muddy bottoms of St. Marks' inshore waters. Flounder fishing here is a game of patience and precision. You'll often find them near drop-offs and in tidal creeks, especially during their fall run. When you hook one, get ready for some weight – St. Marks flounder can grow to impressive sizes, offering both a great fight and a delicious meal.
Look, if you're itching to bend a rod and fill a cooler with some of Florida's finest inshore species, this St. Marks fishing trip is your ticket. Captain Asa's not just about putting you on fish – he's about giving you a day on the water you'll be talking about for years. Whether you're looking to learn new techniques, introduce your kid to fishing, or just enjoy a killer day chasing reds and trout, Angry Fish Inshore Charters has got you covered. The boat's prepped, the fish are biting, and the tides are right – all that's missing is you. So what are you waiting for? Grab your spot on the boat and get ready to make some waves (and maybe break some personal bests) in St. Marks!

Going fishing with captain Asa was like going fishing with an old friend. He knew where the fish were and how to get them to bite. This type of fishing is a lot different than the lakes of the north and the fish are a hell of a lot stronger. My son and I cleared an item off "things we need to do" with this trip.

Captain Martin put us on red fish! First and second casts of the morning brought in fish. He knew when to move and understands the very site specific habits of the red fish. We saw dolphins and alligators. He was very good with my wife who is not a regular fisherwoman. Had a great morning. Highly recommend!!!

Redfish are the bruisers of the flats, known for their copper color and tell-tale spot near the tail. In St. Marks, you'll find 'slot' reds from 18 to 27 inches in the shallows, with bigger bulls cruising deeper waters. These fish love structure, so target oyster bars, dock pilings, and grass edges. Fall is prime time for redfish as they school up for their spawn. They're notorious for their powerful runs and dogged fights, making them a favorite among anglers. Plus, their firm, white meat is excellent on the grill. Reds are often found tailing in very shallow water, sometimes with their backs exposed. It's a sight that'll get your heart racing! For a fun challenge, try sight-fishing with light tackle or fly gear. A local tip: on calm days, look for pushes of water or mud boils in shallow areas. That's often a redfish rooting for crabs in the bottom. A well-placed gold spoon or soft plastic can lead to an explosive take. Just hold on tight!
Sea Trout, also known as Speckled Trout, are a staple in St. Marks waters. These silver-sided beauties typically run 14 to 24 inches, but trophy fish can push 30 inches. You'll find them in grass flats, around oyster bars, and in deeper channels during winter. These fish are aggressive feeders, making them a blast to catch on artificial lures. Topwater plugs at dawn or dusk can lead to explosive strikes. They're also great eating, with delicate, flaky white meat that's hard to beat. Spring and fall are prime seasons, but you can catch trout year-round here. They tend to school up, so where you catch one, there's likely more. A local secret: try drifting live shrimp under a popping cork over grass flats. The sound attracts trout from a distance, and they can't resist a well-presented shrimp. Keep your drag set light – these fish have soft mouths and can throw the hook easily.
Sheepshead, those striped 'convict fish' with human-like teeth, are a blast to catch around St. Marks. They typically run 1-8 pounds, but you might hook into a 20-pounder if you're lucky. Look for them around any structure with barnacles – docks, bridges, and jetties are prime spots. These fish are craftiest bait-stealers you'll ever meet. They'll nibble your hook clean without you feeling a thing. That's why locals love the challenge. Spring is the best time to target them as they move inshore to spawn. Sheepshead put up a great fight and make excellent table fare. Their sweet, white meat is a local favorite. Here's a pro tip: use a small, sharp hook and set it fast when you feel the slightest tap. Fiddler crabs are like candy to these guys, but shrimp work well too. Patience and a sensitive touch are key to outsmarting these wily fish.
Southern Flounder are masters of disguise, blending perfectly with the sandy or muddy bottoms they call home. These flat fish usually range from 15 to 18 inches, but trophy-sized ones can hit 30+ inches. You'll find them in shallow coastal waters, bays, and estuaries around St. Marks. They're ambush predators, so look for them near structures or drop-offs. Fall is prime time for flounder as they move to deeper waters to spawn. Anglers love targeting them for their delicious, mild white meat and the challenge they present. These fish are sneaky biters, so patience is key. A local trick: use a slow retrieve with your bait or lure, dragging it along the bottom. Flounder often grab prey and hold it, so wait a few seconds before setting the hook. Light tackle and live bait like mud minnows or finger mullet work great. Keep your eyes peeled for their distinctive outline on the bottom – it's like a fishy game of hide-and-seek!
Great day on the water! Asa is extremely experienced and willing to share his knowledge. He created a nice low key vibe, showed us some cool spots, and helped us catch a bunch of trout and some slot redfish.
